Kathleen Lhost, Executive Director

Kathleen Lhost is the Executive Director for the Paper Discovery Center. As Executive Director, Kathleen directs daily operations and fundraising for the organization.

Kathleen has lived in Appleton for over 30 years with her husband Thomas, an Appleton native. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Statistical Analysis, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School. She began her career in the private practice of law in Appleton for eight years, and then worked as Court Commissioner for Outagamie County for 15 years.

Prior to accepting the position of Executive Director, Kathleen was the Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Crisis Center for six years.


Barb Sauer, Director of Education and Visitor Services

Barb Sauer is the Director of Education & Visitor Services. Her main responsibilities at the Paper Discovery Center are to manage permanent and temporary traveling exhibits, manage archive collection, and assist with the development and implementation of educational programs.

Barb grew up in Northern New Jersey, near New York City. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University.   She worked for Kimberly Clark Corporation in Neenah, Wisconsin for 19 years in research & development. Her experience ranges across many business sectors, including: feminine care, adult care, new business, and consumer tissue. She also held positions ranging from 'fuzzy front end' concept development to commercial implementation and manufacuring support.

Barb obtained a Master's Degree in Education from National Louis University by attending evening and weekend classes. She has taught science in middle and high school.

Barb lives in Fremont, WI with her husband Bob, who also worked at Kimberly Clark for 20 years, her daughter Claire, and her son Cory.

Her favorite past times include enjoying the outdoors - skiing, biking, canoeing, or hiking.


Linda Werner, Educator

Linda Werner joined the Paper Discovery staff as an educator in March 2010. Her main responsibilities at the Paper Discovery Center are to lead field trips and help develop the educational programs.

Linda attended high school in New Jersey. She graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA. where she studied education and was certified to teach social studies and psychology. Linda joins us with lots of experience as an educator. She has taught in schools, as well as worked for the Girl Scouts, the Fox Cities Children's Museum, and the Whitaker Center for Science and Art in Harrisburg, PA. Linda has experience working for the paper industry and her husband, Bill, currently works for Appleton Paper.


Jane Wells, Volunteer Coordinator / Educator

Jane Wells serves as Volunteer Coordinator /Educator. Her focus is to build our volunteer program with emphasis on recruitment, training, and recognizing our wonderful volunteer staff. She also assists with school field trips and our educational programs.

Her childhood was spent on Doty Island in Menasha. She grew up with “paper industry” discussions at the dinner table as her mother, Rose Heimerman, worked in the offices of Marathon, American Can, and James River during those childhood years. Jane graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services. With over 25 years of experience in the human services field she has gained knowledge in program development and implementation, volunteer recruitment and retention practices, and promotional and marketing material development.

Currently Jane serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade where she holds an Officer position as well as Chair of the Nomination and Recruitment Committee. Her prior work experience includes Program Coordinator at the Brigade, Childcare Department Head with Club West, and Lead Teacher with Neenah Park & Recreation Department’s Playtime program. She volunteers in the community with the Brigade, Meals On Wheels, Neenah schools, and has been a licensed foster parent with Winnebago County.

Jane, her husband, and four children live on their hobby farm in the Town of Clayton.
