Children and adults

alike joined us for the Summer Science Series in July.  They experienced interesting experiments with thermal energy (7/20-23) including: secret messages with lemon juice, singing spoons, shattered quick-frozen flowers, and a tasty treat with liquid nitrogen. During the Flying Objects event  (7/27-30) visitors enjoyed the chance to shoot a rocket they created as well as make their own kite.  There was lots of fun for everyone.

In August we have two more Summer Science Series events - Optical Illusions (8/17-20) and the Science of Separation (8/24-27). Come and join us to enjoy the tricks your eyes can play and lots of hands-on experiments and separation challenges!

"Cracking the Code" at the Paper Discovery Center

October 25, 4-6 pm

Statistics from the US Labor department clearly show the impressive spike in mathematics / computer science jobs over this next decade, while also showing the worrisome gap in projected graduates with degrees in these disciplines. F.O.C.U.S. is a collaborative effort trying to close that gap. Participating partners include: area educational venues such as the Paper Discovery Center, universities, technical colleges, WI Department of Instruction, professional engineering organizations, the chamber of commerce - career

connections, and area businesses.

2010, the inaugural year of F.O.C.U.S. resulted in 4 hands-on sessions between youth, age 12 and up, and STEM mentors which involved hands-on activities and problem solving challenges in disciplines such as: electronics, medical technology, and food science.  This year, the Paper Discovery Center is proud to host 'Cracking the Code' - a hands-on computer science activity sponsored by Time Warner Cable. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 25.  Interested participants should register by contacting

The same group is spearheading STEMFEST - an open house of interactive science booths throughout City Center in downtown Appleton on Saturday, Oct. 8. The event includes free admission to the Building for Kids.

FRIENDS OF DARD HUNTER CONFERENCE

The Midwest Regional FRIENDS OF DARD HUNTER Conference will gather in Wisconsin's paper-rich Fox River Valley, October 13 - 16, 2011. Tours of JJ Plank Corp, one of three watermark manufacturers in the world, and the rare opportunity to walk through an operating paper mill will precede hands-on workshops at the Paper Discovery Center. Workshops, presentations and conference activities are designed to build on the fundamentals of papermaking and the book arts and facilitate community among attendees.

The Friends of Dard Hunter is an organization in the United States that connects, encourages, and educates anyone interested in hand papermaking. It was founded in 1981 to preserve the collection of books, papers, equipment, and artifacts from all over the world that Dard Hunter had collected in his decades of research on hand papermaking. This collection is irreplaceable since he traveled before the devastation of World War II. His collection found a permanent home at the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum in Atlanta, Ga. in 1992. Support for this collection is one of the primary goals of the Friends. Dard Hunter is an inductee in the Paper Industry Hall of Fame.  His video biography can be viewed at the Paper Discovery Center or on-line  at http://www.paperhall.org/inductees/bios/2008/dard_hunter.php

The Grummer family of Appleton are coordinating the event in Appleton and welcome all who can attend the 2011 Midwest Regional Conference.

Thanks to Time Warner Cable for sponsoring a free day during our Flying Objects Summer Science Series.  We had over 170 visitors!  Interested youth joined the Connect a Million Minds program.  The goal is to 'inspire the next generation of problem solvers by connecting young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)'.  Events hosted by organizations like the Paper Discovery Center and university outreach centers are listed in an on-line "connectory". Members can search for events in their area.

Visitors received a complementary Toy Story pocket pack of tissues donated by Kimberly Clark Corporation, and signed up for a chance at a door prize - artwork from Steve Wertz or a Papermaking Kit from Arnold Grummer.  Congrats to the winner, Margaret from Owatonna, MN.

Celebrate the Fox brings 500 to the riverfront!

The first annual Celebrate the Fox occurred on July 23.  About 500 visitors attended to enjoy Fox River art, live music, a sampling of food from riverfront restaurants and historic tours! This new community event was organized to celebrate the rebirth of the riverfront in Appleton and to announce to the community that the riverfront has a lot to offer from family friendly venues, restaurants, nature trails, historical homes and new developments. The great turn out indicates that people are ready to embrace the Fox River and recognize its importance to Appleton and the Fox Cities.

The event offered something for everyone. We had a great collection of art by local artists on display in the River Level of the Paper Discovery Center, along with food from riverfront restaurants. People enjoyed our unique view of the river from our patio area. There was live music upstairs in the Atlas Coffee Mill provided by Noah Harmon, and a Lawrence Horn Quartet. Residents from the historic, Old Third Ward provided walking tour information. It was a beautiful day and the star of the event was the Fox River. Even the brief cloudburst did not dampen the energy of the event. The event was such a success; we hope to repeat it annually.

Thank you to all of the organizers and participants, including: Appleton Historical Society,Old Third Ward, Willems Marketing, Appleton Downtown Inc., Lawrence Horn Quartet, Stone Cellar Brew Pub, Fratello's, Pullman's, Nan Sorella's, Fox Banquets, Bon Appetit, Atlas Coffee Mill & Cafe, Eagle Flats, Fox Wisconsin Heritage Parkway and River Heath. Riverfront artists included: Tom Dietrich, Tom Schultz, Phil Sealy, Betty Proper, John Hoepfner, and Troy Jones.
