School Year Field Trips Wrap Up

The Paper Discovery Center staff and volunteers have been very busy this spring, as we hosted many school field trips.  All total over 3000 students visited us this school year!

To modify a well-known ad slogan, "Choosy teachers, choose the Paper Discovery Center!"  We work with teachers to customize their experience and deliver a solid product that meets their needs and matches their curriculum.  Teachers and chaperones compliment us on how well we explain papermaking and the related topics at the kids' level.  Our field trips are touted as being very well organized, with little down time while the students are kept extremely engaged.  Visitors deeply appreciate our friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers, while they thoroughly enjoy the beautiful facility and scenic location on the Fox River.

2011 Inductees Selected

The Paper Industry International Hall of Fame's membership roster will expand to 105 on Oct. 6 with the induction of five more paper industry notables.

Hall of Fame Exhibit, click to see previous inductees & their video-biographies.

 This year's inductees include:

  • Daniel Kevill Brown, who led Neenah Paper and was a founding trustee of the Institute of Paper Chemistry and active in various paper industry associations.
  • Chester Carlson, inventor of the Xerox copying process, New York City.
  • Georg Jayme, professor cellulose chemistry, Technical University of Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany.
  • Jori Eino Pesonen, retired, headed Valmet, Helsinki, Finland.
  • John Stoveken, built and ran paper mills in the 1850s, helped establish the paper industry in the Fox River Valley, Kaukauna.

The event will be at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel. John D. Williams, president and chief executive officer of Domtar Corp., will be the keynote speaker.

The Paper Industry International Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who, through their inventions, initiative and efforts, built or improved paper and allied industries worldwide.

The 17th annual ceremony will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and ceremony at 8.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to view the hanging of the commemorative plaques at the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame inside the Paper Discovery Center at 425 W. Water St.  Reservations can be made through the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame office at 920-380-7491.

Join Us in Celebrating the Fox River

Saturday, July 23rd

1-5 pm

Residents of the Fox Valley hold the Fox River dear to their hearts.  Nature's travel system which played such an important role in our heritage, continues to be an incredible asset to our community.  Certainly the role it plays evolves over time, including future plans for riverfront development and the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Trail.

Last year was the inaugural Fox River Heritage Paddle series, where boaters traveled different sections of the river on weekends throughout the summer.  This year the series will be repeated and expanded.  On Saturday, July 23rd, a trip leaves from Shattuck Park in Neenah at 9:40 am (registration starts at 7 am) and is expected to end about 1 pm at Lutz Park in Appleton, 8.5 total miles.  There are a few interim points to rest or take out to shorten the trip.

After this event, all who appreciate the river, paddler or not, are invited to a celebration.  There will be music at the Atlas Coffee Mill, while downstairs in the Paper Discovery Center Riverfront level, people can see a display of river art work, including the Tom Schultz Locks Paintings, move boats through our locks model, learn about the various river-support organizations (click on logos above), and enjoy the company of others while munching on snacks.

We hope you can join us in this free celebration!

University Interns Give our Computer Systems a Face Lift
Tim Natzke, UWGB graduating senior.

As a non-profit venue we run lean and mean, with a big wish list!  This spring provided the privilege to work with some outstanding computer science students from University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Tim Natzke and Andy Voight.  Craig Booher and Tom Frawley volunteered their time and talents to mentor and assist the students.
Andy Voight - UWGB
The result - increased efficiency, computer security, and a great foundation to develop a long range technology plan.    The Paper Discovery Center truly benefited, but so did the students.  They got great work experience and enjoyed seeing their contributions make a significant difference.

Kendra Woepse, another UWGB intern,  helped in the marketing area, including setting up our facebook page.  Patty Doyle, an intern from UW Stevens Point, helped out twice a week this spring semester with visitor services to gain museum work experience.   A big thanks for their contributions!

Printing Enlarged Copies - The Past vs Present

Lucigraph
Nowadays it takes a simple click of the mouse to enlarge a digital drawing and another click to send it to the engineering printer.  It wasn't so simple years ago.  However the process gave you a real appreciation for optics!

Recently the Paper Discovery Center received a Lucigraph, an image copying projection machine, donated by the family of George F. Treiber, who used the machine when he worked at Marathon Corporation in Menasha during the 1920's -60's.  The machine has a footprint of about 3 feet x 5 feet and looks like an antique camera.  The operator can adjust bellows to vary the focal length, as light shining on the original drawing is reflected and travels through a lens and dark chamber before it is focused as an enlarged image on tracing paper that is positioned on a glass plate.  Then the operator needs patience, skill, and a steady hand as he/she traces the image of light beams onto the paper.  Our staff can't wait to incorporate this fun piece of equipment in the next Science of Sight session!

This tool certainly tells the tale of how much technology has changed.  In a similar way, the old manual typewriter in the printing exhibit at the Paper Discovery Center is a stroll into the past.  Our young visitors have lots of fun banging on the keys of this apparent 'dinosaur of printing'.  We call these tools 'antiques' but those of us who grew up with them know it wasn't too long ago.  It appears technology has not only changed our lives, but has compressed time too!

Many thanks to Harold Miller, Dave Opsteen, and Roger Thiel - volunteers who refurbished the equipment to mint working condition.

The Paper Discovery Center is a museum /science & technology center located in the renovated historic Atlas Mill on the Fox River in Appleton, WI.  The parent non-profit organization is the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.  Our mission is to Celebrate All Things Paper - the Wonder and the Legacy.
